Materials Guide

We choose every material with intention.

This guideexplains what each one is, why we use it, and how to care for it — so you can make choices that feel right for you.

01 · Mulberry Silk

The original luxury. Thousands of years of craft, distilled into a single thread.

Mulberry silk is the finest and most prized variety of natural silk, produced by Bombyx mori silkworms fed exclusively on white mulberry leaves. The result is a long, uniform fibre with
exceptional lustre, strength, and oftness — far superior to wild or mixed silk varieties.

At Lian Collection, we use Grade 6A Mulberry Silk — the highest commercial grade available — in our pillowcases and select sleepwear. The momme weight (mm) indicates the density of the fabric: the higher the momme, the heavier, more durable, and more luxurious the silk.

Momme Weight Guide

• 19 Momme — Lightweight, breathable, ideal for warm climates and delicate accessories

• 22 Momme — The versatile middle ground; smooth, durable, and widely used in pillowcases

• 25 Momme — Our most popular weight; noticeably richer feel, excellent for pillowcases and sleepwear

• 30 Momme — The heaviest and most opulent; exceptional durability and depth of colour

Silk Weave Types

The weave of the silk determines its finish, drape, and feel. Lian Collection uses three distinct weaves across our product range:

Silk Charmeuse  — The most common silk weave for pillowcases. A smooth, satin-like face with a more matte reverse. Lightweight, fluid, and beautifully cool against the skin.

Silk Twill  — Recognised by its subtle diagonal weave pattern. Slightly denser and more structured than charmeuse, with a refined, understated lustre. More durable and resistant to snagging — a
timeless choice.

Stretch Charmeuse  — A modern evolution of charmeuse with a slight elasticity built into the weave. More pronounced mirror-like lustre, smoother drape, and greater resistance to creasing. The most opulent of the three finishes.

 Why Silk for Pillowcases?

• Reduces friction on hair — ignificantly less breakage, frizz, and split ends compared to cotton

• Gentle on skin — the smooth surface does not tug or crease the face during sleep

• Naturally temperature-regulating — cool in summer, warm in winter

• Hypoallergenic — naturally resistant to dust mites andother allergens

• Does not absorb skincare products — your night cream stays on your skin, not your pillow

Silk vs Satin — What's the Difference?

Satin is a weave, not a material. Satin-weave fabric can be made from polyester, nylon, or silk. When people say "satin pillowcase" they usually mean polyester satin — which is far less breathable, less hypoallergenic, and far less kind to hair and skin than real mulberry silk. If the label does not say "100% mulberry silk", it is likely not silk.

Silk Care Guide

• Hand wash in cool water with a mild silk detergent, or machine wash on a delicate cycle at 30°C or below

• Do not wring or tumble dry — lay flat or hang to air dry in shade

• Do not bleach

• Iron on the lowest setting, inside out, while slightly damp

• Store away from direct sunlight to preserve colour

With proper care, high-quality mulberry silk softens beautifully over time while retaining its natural lustre.

02 · TENCEL™ Lyocell

Made from trees. Gentler on the planet. Impossibly soft against the skin.

TENCEL™ is a branded lyocell fibre produced by Lenzing AG in Austria. It is made from sustainably sourced eucalyptus wood pulp, processed in a closed-loop system where more than 99% of the water and solvents used are recovered and reused. The result is a fibre with an exceptionally small environmental footprint — and an extraordinarily soft hand feel.

Why TENCEL™ for Bedding?

• Naturally breathable — micro-fibril structure allows air to circulate freely, reducing night sweats

• Moisture-wicking — absorbs and releases moisture up to 50% more efficiently than cotton

• Cooling — naturally temperature-regulating, making it ideal for warm sleepers and summer nights

• Incredibly soft — often described as feeling like silk, but at a more accessible price point

• Sustainable — biodegradable, produced from FSC-certified wood sources, closed-loop manufacturing

• Hypoallergenic — smooth fibres are gentle on sensitive skin and less likely to cause irritation

TENCEL™ vs Cotton

Standard cotton is breathable but can feel heavy and trap heat. TENCEL™ fibres are significantly finer than cotton, giving the fabric a silkier drape and a lighter, cooler feel. It also requires less water to produce and biodegrades at end of life — making it a more considered choice for conscious consumers.

TENCEL™ vs Silk

Silk offers unmatched beauty benefits for hair and skin. TENCEL™ is not a replacement for silk — it is a different material with different strengths. TENCEL™ excels in breathability, sustainability, and ease of care. For those who want the cooling, sustainable benefits of a natural fibre without the delicate care requirements of silk, TENCEL™ is an excellent choice — particularly for full bedding sets.

TENCEL™ Care Guide

• Machine wash at 30°C on a gentle cycle

• Use a mild, liquid detergent — avoid powder detergents

• Tumble dry on low heat or air dry

• Iron on medium heat if needed

• Do not bleach

TENCEL™ becomes softer with every wash.

03 · Cotton Gauze

Light as air. Worn like a second skin.

Cotton gauze — also known as muslin or double gauze — is a loosely woven cotton fabric with an open, breathable structure. It is made by weaving cotton threads in a crisscross pattern with deliberate gaps between them, creating a fabric that is light, airy, and exceptionally breathable.

Why Cotton Gauze for Sleepwear?

• Extremely lightweight — barely-there feel, ideal for warm nights

• Highly breathable — the open weave allows maximum airflow

• Soft from the first wear — no stiff break-in period

• Gets softer with every wash — the fabric relaxes and becomes more supple over time

• Relaxed, effortless drape — flattering on all body shapes without clinging

• Easy care — machine washable and low-maintenance

Cotton Gauze Care Guide

• Machine wash at 30–40°C

• Tumble dry on low or air dry

• Iron on medium heat — slight wrinkling is normal and part of the fabric's character

• Do not bleach

Cotton gauze is designed to look relaxed — a little natural wrinkling is part of its effortless charm.

04 · Slub Cotton

Texture with character. Every thread tells a story.

Slub cotton is a natural cotton fabric characterised by irregular, slightly thicker sections in the yarn — called "slubs" — that occur deliberately during the spinning process. These variations create a subtly textured, irregular surface that gives the fabric a handcrafted, artisanal quality entirely unlike flat, uniform cotton.

Why Slub Cotton for Sleepwear?

• Unique texture — the natural irregularities in the weave give each garment a one-of-a-kind character

• Breathable and lightweight — comfortable across seasons

• Relaxed, lived-in feel — soft and unfussy from the first wear

• Natural appearance — the subtle texture reads as effortlessly considered, not overdressed

• Durable — the structure of slub cotton holds its shape well over time

Slub Cotton Care Guide

• Machine wash at 30–40°C

• Tumble dry on low or air dry

• Iron on medium heat

• Do not bleach

• Some natural variation in texture is expected and part of the fabric's character

05 · Bamboo Cotton

The softness of bamboo. The familiarity of cotton.

Bamboo cotton is a blended fabric combining bamboo-derived viscose with natural cotton. Bamboo grows rapidly without pesticides and requires minimal water — making it one of the most sustainable raw materials in textiles. Blended with cotton for added structure and durability, bamboo cotton combines the best qualities of both fibres.

Why Bamboo Cotton for Loungewear?

• Exceptionally soft — bamboo fibres are naturally smooth and round, with no sharp edges to irritate the skin

•  Moisture-wicking — draws moisture away from the body and evaporates it quickly

• Naturally antibacterial — bamboo contains a natural bio-agent called "bamboo kun" that inhibits bacterial growth

• Breathable and temperature-egulating — comfortable across all seasons

• Sustainable — bamboo is one of the fastest-growing plants on earth and requires no replanting

• Gentle on sensitive skin — an excellent choice for those prone to irritation

Bamboo Cotton Care Guide

• Machine wash at 30°C on a gentle cycle

• Tumble dry on low heat or air dry

• Iron on low to medium heat

• Do not bleach

06 · Silk Blend

The touch of silk, with the ease of everyday wear.

Our silk blend sleepwear contains a proportion of real mulberry silk fibre blended with other natural or technical fibres. The blend is designed to bring the characteristic softness and slight sheen of silk to garments that are easier to care for and more accessible in price than pure silk pieces.

What to Expect from Silk Blend

• A noticeably softer, smoother hand feel compared to standard cotton or synthetic fabrics

• A subtle silk-like lustre — less pronounced than 100% silk, but visible in the drape and finish

• Greater ease of care than pure silk — generally more forgiving in the wash

• A lighter, more relaxed construction — ideal for loungewear and casual sleepwear

Because the silk content and blend ratio varies across our silk blend range, we recommend checking the individual product care label for specific washing instructions. As a general guide:

Silk Blend Care Guide

• Hand wash or gentle machine wash at 30°C or below

• Use a mild detergent — avoid harsh chemicals or bleach

• Air dry or tumble dry on the lowest setting

• Iron on low heat if needed

• Check the individual product label for specific guidance
